To think that a horse breed that didn’t exist 60 years ago would become a genuine legend! Yes, I’m talking about the Belgian Warmblood or BWP, that has transcended celebrity standing within such a short time period. The breeding of light weight horses was historically prohibited in Belgium, as the country wished to maintain the pureness of its famous Braband strain. It was only in the early 1950s that the govt. relaxed its prohibition and the Minister of Agriculture gave his approval to a breeding project that concerned horse breeds from all parts of Europe. The Warmblood was an end result of this project. The first horse of this breed was born in 1953.

The Warmblood has acquired incredible success in sports arenas, particularly in disciplines like dressage and show jumping. It is a horse with strong conformation and rude health and a huge tight body featuring broad hindquarters and powerful hind legs.

The Warmblood has an average height of 16 to 17 hh.

Belgium’s horse breeding programme is firmly regulated and breeding is authorized only with horses that meet draconian standards. The programme has produced robust bloodlines including names like Big Ben, Darco and Sapphire.

When they reach the age of 3 or 4, Warmblood stallions are put thru a Hengstenkeuring or evaluation test; this test judges the horses ‘ conformation and loose jumping abilities. The horses are than inspected and evaluated by expert vets before the last stage, when they’re assessed for performance when under the saddle. Only those horses that get thru this test successfully get cleared for breeding. While mares are also assessed, they’re not subject to evaluations under the saddle.

The Warmblood BWP registry hopes to breed horses of enticing personalities that are a pleasure to ride, and can also be used to participate in international equine events. Two aspects of the breed which have been given great concern are health and conformation.

Warmblood horses sport a variety of colours like chestnut, gray, black, bay and brown, and some pintos.

As a strongly healthy and versatile breed which has achieved great success as dressage horses, show jumpers and all round sport horses, the Warmblood breed has gained worldwide renown. The Warmblood is frequently the horse to beat in most equestrian disciplines.

Within a bit more than half a century, the Warmblood’s versatility has made it one of the planet’s most accomplished in-demand sport horse breeds. This breed has made a massive impact in nearly every equestrian discipline, and looks superb for lots more in the future.

Maybe one of the more alarming equine illnesses an equestrian can ever encounter is the navicular disease; on any normal day a tutor could find her horse brought to her haunches by extraordinary bouts of pain, or may be unpleasantly surprised by a horse undergoing training suddenly slowing down in intense agony halfway into the routine. For owners of steeds used basically for leisurely horse riding, it can be more worrying, what with their horses all of a sudden being unable and unwilling to move on, stumbling over through gaits they'd routinely nonchalantly perform. The agony comes from a powerful burning agony owing to increased blood flow in the hooves of the horse and the accompanying shifting of what is often known as the coffin bone.
How To Detect Navicular Disease In Horses is a post from: Colic In Horses

Maybe one of the more alarming equine illnesses an equestrian can ever encounter is the navicular disease; on any normal day a tutor could find her horse brought to her haunches by extraordinary bouts of pain, or may be unpleasantly surprised by a horse undergoing training suddenly slowing down in intense agony halfway into the routine. For owners of steeds used basically for leisurely horse riding, it can be more worrying, what with their horses all of a sudden being unable and unwilling to move on, stumbling over through gaits they’d routinely nonchalantly perform. The agony comes from a powerful burning agony owing to increased blood flow in the hooves of the horse and the accompanying shifting of what is often known as the coffin bone.

Navicular disease can be caused by abnormal hoof growth, and this in turn can be promoted by not properly trimming horse hooves frequently. A hoof will grow and wear in accordance to what type of footing it’s kept on. In poor footing and lack of regular, correct trimming, the coffin bone can be rendered immobile and therefore cause blood circulation in the hoof to be constrained. Extreme conditions see the coffin bone sinking to the base of the affected hoof and piercing through the hoof. The condition is often observed in front hooves and usually both feet are afflicted. The risk of acquiring the illness increases when horses are sometimes kept in stalls it is exacerbated by physically demanding tasks or by being overweight. Also, horses whose physiques aren’t correct in proportion or conformation are at higher risk.

Thoroughbreds have smaller feet compared to their bodies and are therefore susceptible to navicular; quarter horses have the tendency to be susceptible to it too. Ponies as young as a year old can be diagnosed with navicular, the illness itself is gradual. As navicular gets worse over the course of time it can be hard to detect it in the very early stages. Signs of the disease are:

-Her stride is shortened, and she’s reluctant to lengthen it.

-She stumbles through gaits.

-She shifts body weight when resting.

-She is uneven while turning.

Winter is on hand and the hay makers are making hay while the sun shines. I should stock up on hay for my horses for the winter, and am discovering the hard way, like a lot of people with horses, that hay has shot up in price and shot down in quality. Horse owners have to use supplements with even prime quality hay. When we were getting hay at 2 or 3 dollars a bale, we did not feel it was any kind of strain to pay for the supplements too. Now, when hay has hit exorbitant prices per bale and appears to have hit the very bottom in quality, we feel the pinch. We are indignant that at a price this high the hay quality is so poor; we’d have anticipated the best hay for the way that we are being scalped.

It seems that high spec hay has just about disappeared from the market. Farming strategies nowadays involve continual usage of chemical-based herbicides and fertilizers thru the year. While this improves crop volumes, it doesn’t do much for the purity of produce.

Chemicals have a unfavorable effect on the natural bacteria and fungi that soil contains. In its natural state, arable soil is rich in essential minerals, other plant nutriments and water content. Better water means better grass and crop growth, better growth decreases possibility of drought. Compost and other nature-based fertilizing agents sustain the healthful ecosystems of soil. They support natural cycles and keep soil constantly recharged. In reality, chemical fertilizer is unnecessary for fruitful soil that is moved regularly. Organic farming can be costly at the initial stages in comparison to chemicals-based farming, but pretty soon, it works out much cheaper because it maintains soil fertility and increases yield.

Every time we pay hay merchants top dollar for bottom hay, we are inspiring hay farmers to stick to their chemical-based methods and ignore natural farming. What we should do is follow the example of cattlemen: they don’t accept hay that hasn’t been tested for quality and passed. This way, competition in the hay supply market will increase, and increased competition often means good news for the purchaser. If your hay purchases are not so bulky as to justify testing, you need to encourage your provider to get tests conducted on hay in his stock. You might also ask the hay grower to get a test done. Reputed labs like Equi-Analytical do comprehensive hay tests for charges not surpassing $75. If your current hay supplier acts difficult, ditch him and get another one. Get all your pony owning mates to put pressure on low quality hay. Success in your efforts to get consistent high quality hay can be accomplished only if the effort is sustained by every purchaser. Success incorporates determination.

So long as you are feeding your horses poor quality hay, you’ll need to bolster the hay with other feed of high nutritive value. Digestive enzymes and probiotics should represent part of your horses ‘ typical diet. I find performance horses prosper on Simplexity Health’s Essentials and horses for pleasure do well on APA, also from Simplexity Health. Probiotics like KLPP and Pro-Bi are also very handy for horse’s hind gut digestion. They are very recommendable supplements to feed your horses when they aren’t getting the best hay.

There are numerous tools an equestrian can use when coaching horses for various sport and activities, and depending on what the coaching is for, the prerequisite for more effective tools and better usage of the tools is made more relevant. As an example, the bridles and ropes employed in horse riding coaching would be insufficient when teaching a horse dressage maneuvers. There are various aids that help not just in training but also during the activity the steeds were trained for, and as a skilled coach and rider would know, getting well familiar with them and their uses is essential.

With modern methods of pony coaching, there are natural and artificial aids. The natural aids are mostly parts of the human body, for example the feet, legs, and hands, and even the voice. Artificial aids are everything else—from the ropes to the bridle to the bit and everything between. When you think about it, all aids and even horse riding and coaching itself is artificial, as horses were not meant to be tamed and trained. But as far as latest perspectives go, all bodily members and aids are natural. There are corresponding notions of dangers and hazards to using artificial aids as they may sow fear and cause negative reactions from horses, but that is all just hype. Even natural aids when used improperly, can beget unfavourable responses from horses and even sow fear instead of respect. It is all about utilizing the aids properly.

One major benefit of natural aids though, is that they are always readily available, what with being human body parts and all. But again, it’s all in the use. And when it comes to pony riding and coaching, particularly for sport as exacting as dressage, the right use of a mix of artificial and natural aids is best.

The secret to making the most out of natural aids is that everything should be coordinated. Cues should not come from your voice commands alone or from established motions of specific limbs. Don’t just use a command and your arms or your legs and feet, always include your back and especially your seat when giving cues. For instance, an ideal way to employ a coordinated effort of natural aids with the help of artificial aids to make a horse slow down would start with the rider bracing his back. This drives the mount into the bridle, and from there the hands can cue the pony to decelerate. A fluid and virtually effortless motion from the back to the bridle to the hands—almost infinitesimal and only slightly noticeable—that’s how well body motion used in association with artificial aids can influence and command a pony.

Natural aids are often quite convenient, as besides from always being available they’re simple to manipulate and thus easy to control. But even something as seemingly harsh as a whip, when used at the right times in acceptable measure, can be of gigantic assistance not solely in pony riding, but in training for equestrian sport or activity. And mixing their usefulness with natural aids is the way to go.

For equestrian trainers new to the trade, horses can come in several shapes and sizes, but most irksomely, different temperaments also. And a horse’s character type dictates what kind of coaching and even what kind of sport it’s best suited for. There are horses that are terribly eager to please and are quite friendly, a charm to go horse riding with. There are active personality types that prefer challenging equestrian sport over plain horse riding, and there are others who’d do almost anything for food. Let’s focus on one particular character type: the Metal part kind of horse.

Metal types are some of the most trustworthy mounts and sport or chore horses you would ever come across, because they covet routine. They have to be in a position to do something they’re used to doing in a schedule actually they need to so badly that if they don’t, they get wired and develop many stress-related health issues until they’re reunited with their beloved routine. As you can imagine, a horse that does something so wholeheartedly and even feverishly is a valuable asset that overreaches the easy joys of horse riding and is worth its weight in gold when it comes to equestrian sport or other activities it’s trained for.

Nevertheless together with the good comes the bad. Metal types rely too much on established routine that they encounter difficulty when introduced to new routines and new equestrian training or work. Also, if the trainer or breeder happens to skip a scheduled routine, they simply get stressed. The fact is, a horse would have to learn plenty of new things in the course of its equestrian training, even during the course of its standard pony care and health maintenance. Additionally, not a lot of trainers have all of the time in the world to zealously stick to routine day in and day out. While older metal types get the point and are straightforward to introduce to new routines or exercises and can stay off of regular schedule and left in pasture for a while without adverse reactions, younger metal types are not the same.

So what can a tutor do to help an eager metal type gelding avoid a difficult experience? Stick to routine. The routine does not have to be an exercise of precise standards, as long as you do one thing regularly and establish that as routine, that would be the routine the metal type youngling would come to expect and depend on. For yourself as the equestrian trainer, keep it simple: like pulling her out of the stall and tying her onto a trailer for an hour everyday , or a daily mane brushing routine. If you actually enjoy pony riding and can do it everyday , then make that your usual thing.

The less effort it takes, the easier it is on you. When you introduce new training or exercises and your metal type pony shows indicators of stress, regress to your routine to help deaden the symptoms, then transition slowly into the new routine.

It costs a lot of money to buy tickets for the party at the horse races if you go to the racetrack. The same thrilling vibe can be created at your home with great decorations, drink, and food. Organize a gathering of your family and friends, dress up in your finery and watch the race on TV. It will cost you a fraction of the price of attending the real thing.

Plan the guest list at least a month before the big day. Set a stylish horsey theme and ask your friends to dress accordingly. Ask each guest to bring a horse-themed gift that can be used as bets. Two weeks before the function, order at least 24 red roses. If your budget doesn’t permit this, get some cheaper silk flowers at the local craft market.

Get the tables ready on the day of the event. A great idea for the tables is red and white tablecloths with silver cutlery. Place a vase of roses on every table. You can add an attractive splash of style by also placing votive candles on them. A votive candle is a cross between a container candle and a pillar candle. It has a cylindrical shape and, once lit, will melt to take the shape of the votive holder it’s in.

At each table setting, put some race forms, betting cards, and pencils. To produce a western look, tie rope around the sides of the tables. When preparing the buffet table, use another red and white checkered table cloth and lay out the snacks, canapes, sandwiches, and any other eats.

Also scatter horsey accents around the buffet table, e. G. Ribbons, saddles, trophies, and statues. Of course, you must have music playing. The best choice would be subtle piano or gentle jazz. Show the guests where their seats are when they arrive and then they can mingle with each other.

A nice touch would be to serve martinis as they arrive. If you live in the USA, serve mint juleps. These are the traditional drinks of the Kentucky Derby. Have a non-alcoholic cocktail as an alternative. There are plenty of quick, easy, and tasty recipes for these on the internet.

When it’s time to eat, politely encourage all the party at the horse races guests to serve themselves from the buffet table. After this, bet-placing can commence. Keep an eye on the time because you may be enjoying yourselves so much that you forget to turn the TV on for the big race.

A complete horse race form guide will contain a significant amount of information about upcoming events. You can obtain free horse racing tips easily and quickly on the Internet.

Horses can suffer from four types of Equine Herpes Virus, or EHV, and the one that you would like to cope with the least, is the 1st type: EHV-1. Sadly, the most distortive of the strains is also the most commonly contracted. EHV-1, though originally a respiratory ailment alone, has a mutant strain that spreads its effects to become a neurological illness. Infected horses will be carriers of the virus their complete lives, effectively rendering them useless for equestrian sport and too dangerous to expose to other animals.

When under stress a carrier would freely shred the virus, and most infected horses, though seemingly healthy, are occasionally shredding the virus thru breathing secretions. A steed can contract the disease from nose contact with an infected horse or thru sharing tools and aids like bits. Once infected, the blood vessels ferries the virus round the animals ‘ body. You can observe early symptoms like nasal discharge and mild, inconsistent fever that’s hard to detect unless you check ever 6 hours. Vets can check the discharge to work out if it’s indeed EHV-1.

Six to twelve days after infection of the neurological strain, horses would begin to show symptoms. The disease can progress in as little as one to three days with 102 degree F fevers and nasal discharge, loss of appetite, and depression as main indicators. After 1st neurological symptoms start in a steed’s hindquarters, finally the horse will not be able to stand. If left that way, death comes in 24 hours.

The reason for the illness being a pathogen, there’s no known treatment for it. Vets may advocate immune modulator shots to raise the immune system of horses. If the EHV-1 respiration strain is afflicting them, they’d do well with just the shots. But there’s not much an equestrian can do except for alleviate symptoms. There are vaccines that help decrease the spread of the virus and can even prevent the respiration strain from infecting horses, but not the mutant neurological strain.

All steeds from those utilised for straightforward horse riding and those utilised for precise sport should endure a food vaccination scheme, and the equestrian responsible should also practice good herd management for multiple horses. Pregnant mares and newly born babies should be immunized frequently. Breeding stallions are ideally immunized before their breeding season.

Barns should be kept clean and regular sanitation each 4 months is necessary. Barns that had once had an outburst of EHV-1 should be sanitize each two months. This sanitation program helps stop a handful of other equine sicknesses as well. Quarantine any pony suspected of having EHV-1 for 21 days, and if you were on a show or competition and one of the horses except for yours who joined is under suspicion of having EHV-1, take the action to quarantine your horse for 21 days.

In the case of an outbreak, have all handlers and visitors wear leather boots and gloves—easily disinfected with bleach or chlorine. Other measures include adding a disinfectant tub in all entrances and exits of your barns. Sterilize everything: enclosures, tools, aids everything that horses use or stay in.
